Botch – We Are The Romans
(Hydra Head – 1999)
The often forgotten grandfathers of jagged metallic hardcore. Right up there with The Dillinger Escape Plan, these guys split off after this swan song to form bands including Russian Circles, Minus the Bear, These Arms are Snakes, Narrows, and most recently Sumac. Never lacking complexity, but never veering so far off the rails to lose the more casual listener, Botch mastered the balancing act of challenging ideas meets catchy songwriting. There’s some great dynamics on here, but the off-kilter assault of ‘Saint Matthew Returns to the Womb’ always brings me back for multiple slam sessions.
