Wren – Host
Holy Roar Records – 2016
There’s something I love about the restraint and hypnotic rolling sound of post-metal, but many under the umbrella fall into the shadow of some of the genre’s bigger acts. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking a sound and seeing what your personal touch can do with it. Most of the bands I cover here are heavily influenced by a very small handful of bands. But when everyone sounds like a straight-up Cult of Luna tribute, then we have a problem. These guys manage to circumvent that while still sharing that rigid rhythm section and dissonance, but they inhabit a different space than CoL, something more primal.
They released a new album recently, but I always end up coming back to this EP for it’s measured urgency. I hope you get something out of it or it points you in the direction of something even more up your alley.
